Nitrogen can be used to protect ready-made medicines, components as well as perishable ingredients. By eliminating oxygen products are protected against effects of oxidation and microbial growth.

Nitrogen protective atmospheres and modified atmospheres
Using nitrogen protective atmospheres or modified atmospheres protects both finished products and raw materials by preventing microbial growth and oxidation.
In pharmaceutical industry, nitrogen is used:
- to produce prefabricates
- to remove oxygen from reactor vessels
- to remove oxygen from the product
- to shield the product during transport through pipelines within the process line
- for preserving the finished product
- for product packaging
Typically, for pharmaceutical applications and tests nitrogen with a residual oxygen content of 10 ppm - 1% is used.
